LO4: Task 5

Yo im will

This is the final Vlog of this series!!!

The first thing we are going to talk about to day is active and passive thoughts in media.

Theodor Adorno, came up with a theory called Hypodermic Syringe, they said that media has a negative effect on the public, this is because Adorno said that mass audience said that believe anything they see or hear. This was thought up in the 1930’s however later on the active audience theories were all taken in to consideration.

Gauntlett, came up with another theory said that we are able to filter and adapt, to the content we are shown in the media. Basically this means we use media for your own purpose.

We could meet these two schools of thought in the middle and say that media could have a positive effect on people as it can teach us morals and other important life lessons.

McQuial talked about the Gratification Theory, this say that we all use media for our own purpose like in this film might be used for escapism. We also use it for entertainment and personal reality.

Stuart Hall in the ‘80s said that all representations media are specifically encoded by the producer to create a preferred meaning, in the Secret Life of Walter Mitty Walter (played by Ben Stiller) represents the average 40-year-old single man who is looking for a more with his life but is too busy with work.

Walter Is a stereotypical single 40 year old, he is on a match.com , got a good job and isn’t sopantaious but he wishes to have more exiting life. However he is also a counter-type as at the end of the film he is almost completely opposite.

In this film women are not objectified however they are seen as an equal. Walters boss a stereotypical pathological controlling man. Walter is weak to this however this changes though the film.

This film will not have any offensive material, as this is a PG, this rating was given to the film by the BBFC (British board of film classification).  PG (or parental guidance) works can explore challenging issues such as bullying, bereavement or racism. The bullying part of the film comes at 10:15 and 24:50 at these times we see aggressive behaviour and making fun of the main character Walter. In a PG they will be mild bad language such as ‘shit’ or ‘son of a bitch’, however this is doesn’t apply to this film. Sexual reference are allowed in a PG if infrequent and undetailed , also if its a comedy it lessen the effect. They are sexual references in this film at 55 minutes in however as these are not detailed and in a comedic way. I would say that this film would not been censored as it’s only a PG.

This film sound track belongs universal records this means that thy will have paid for the use or given a % to the universal records on the profits of the film. This film could be illegally downloaded or stream though such web sites such as Bitsoup or Ice Films, this is worry for 20th Century Fox as they will loose money.

BBFC will moderate and chose what age certification the film get, the ASA look at what print advisement that the film have done and see if suitable for public consumption. For example this print on screen right now would have nothing that need to be regulated as it doesn’t break any of the regulating bodies. However like this print by Wonder Bra on screen now, was taken down as it was too sexual and was causing men to crash their cars.

Vlog 3

I'm Will from Media Education.

In this vlog will cover demographics.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, produced by 20 Century Fox In 2013.

Here is an example of the imagine entity of this film:

Meet Garry. Garry is 32, he enjoys spending time with his family and watching films, when he's not at work being an accountant. His wife Amy is 29 she is a stay at home mum, she is very busy taxiing the children and making sure dinner is ready for Gary when he gets home from work. Max aged 12  is in year 8, he enjoys playing football and Xbox. His sister is in year 9, she like watching YouTube, spending time with her friends and mum.

As a family they are worked very hard as urban life, is hard a film. The Blyth's try and escape out of the city to county side to go rock climbing, hiking and other such like activates. However find it very hard to do. So as a family they love to go too the cinema on Sunday, as form of escapism.

The gender of this film is target adducing is mainly men. This because males like adventure films they like them more if they life in the city as its a form of escapism. Ben Stiller is a star persona ( as dyer explained in 1975), however in this fill he is an ideal self for a 40 year old, who lives in the city and has boring job. Men are more likely  to watch an adventure film as 60% of adventure film viewers are male.

The age bracket for this film is 8 to 40 as this is trying to hit a large audience, in fact adventure films in this age rating are watched.  This is because the film is a PG (Parental Guidance) this means that everything is mild except they won’t show bullying, bereavement or racism.  This is why the age range is so big as it is a family film and is aimed at families. Also they relationship with the child and grown up shows the adult child relationship which is displayed with Kristen Wiig son and Ben Stiller. [example 24 mins in]

The ideal self in this film is the photographer played by Sean Penn as this is Walter Mitty ideal self. However as Walter Mitty becomes like this so hi is a better ideal self.  For children this could be an ideal self for growing up but the son of Kristen Wiig as he will be around the age of the younger target audience.

The life style of the of the viewer of the are that they generally live in the in the city, they have a affluent job what they get up to at 8 to get in to work for 9, Monday to Friday. Were he will leave at 5 and goo home to eat and watch TV before he goes to bed to go to work the next day.

I would say the age of the viewers is quite viewed as this is family film. At 00:25 in film we see a day dream sequence.  This appeals' to a younger audience as they use a kids toy and have a fight. This is appealing as its relevant to them, however thought out the film they have bits of old music like at 46 minuets in when Space Oddity is played non-diegetic. As this song is quite old this means it apples to a older audience.

The spending power of the target audience is based on the NCRS social grade ABC is 85% . This means that the movie can produce merchandise for people to buy as they have a higher disposable income, as these people. The percentage of ABC1 is 85%, this is because they have a larger disposable income; this means they have more money to spend.

Vlog 4

Hey I'm Will, from Media Education
This Vlog Today is on Advertisement and Distribution.
Before web 2.0 advisement took the forms of posters, billboards, cinema, dvd adverts, Tv and Promotional Events. However in 2002 broadband entered the UK this allowed Web 2.0  to be born. Web 2.0 meant that we had the means to share images and movies though the internet.
This allowed for Social Media to be born. Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, Instagram and bunch of others .Because of how many people use these services this is a great way to advertise, also this is extremely effect as you can easily target the right demographic of the film. If we put this in example, So say and an a film like Secret Life of Walter Mitty they would expose more advertisement to people who like there viewer profiler.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, is produced by 20th century fox. This Means that this film would also be advertised by using our old friend, synergy.  This means that the movie would of been shown on fox tv to the metro news paper. Using Tv is another effective because you can get you demographics easily another way they can do this is put in places that people who match the viewer profile match.
One way films are get publicise is by reviews,  this film was rated 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Another  way is to host events e.g red carpet premiere. This creates ‘hype’ about the film as they is press there so this gives off a lot of exposure for the film
A movie Is designed to be distributed to cinemas this is the first place the movie is shown, this is important. Since having new thec it is cheeper and faster to distribute as they can buy a hard drive instead of a movie real.
Other ways distribution are by dvd and download. Being able to download was part of  Web 2.0, also with Web 2.0 we are able to take a dvd and put it on to a sever and you can access it from any where in the world. Another way films are distributed are by monthly subscription e.g Sky, Netflix, Now tv, etc….   Walter Mitty would of been on Sky as Sky is in the same conglomerate as 20th century fox.

L01 Task 2: Analysis of The Seacret Life of Walter

A Media Education  Productions.Hi i'm Will, today i'll be analysing "The secret life of Walter Mitty" (2013) PurposeThis film produced to to entertain, however it also provokes a thought about that anything is possible and people can always chase there dreams as this is what the films about. "The Secret life of Walter Mitty" is a hybrid.Genreahhhh....Not a Prius. It means mixture of genre combined to make a super genre. This film a mixture of Adventure, Drama and Comedy with a dash of romance. Like if you add Indian Jones, 12 years of a  slave, the hangover and titanic and mashed them up like potatoes.FormThe form of this film is a feature as it is long. To be exacted it's  one hundred and fourteen minutes. This film is a remake of a 1950s, Its promoted in cinemas and distributed in wholesale and online.StyleThe style  of this film is adventure film. i know this from the classic conventions of travelling in to the unknown like going to greenland to find a thumb. This is a modern arty film, i mean this as the editing and camera work was adventure with matches the stye of being an adventure.NarativeThe narrative of this film follows Todorov’s 5 stages of narrative. The  first stage  is a state of equilibrium this means that, at the start of the film we learn about that Walter has a few problems, with women. However, this is normal in the story world. The 2nd stage is a disruption of the equilibrium. Walter goes to look for a photo slide for last ever cover of life magazine. However the the slide is missing. Next we have the recognition that it has been disrupted, when Walter goes to look for the slide this is where the recognition happens, as he finds out the its not there. The 4th stage is the attempt to fix this the dilemma. Walter goes on adventure skating downhill, running from volcanos escaping sharks and climbing mountains to love the problem. However he finds out that the slides in wallet at his mums house what has been thrown in the bin, he goes home and his mum took the wallet out of the bin. So finally Walter has solved the dilemma this creates a new state of equilibrium with is the 5th stage.
Camera WorkAt 6.06 in the film .This is a aerial shot of people walking out of a underground passage, this is shot has been shot using diagonal lines, it also use the rule of third. It has the main character recognisable by his beige coat is positioned in the centre of the middle box. The colours in this have been balanced. The editing technique of the plane flying across the water 37:30 is an a ellipse, as it shows the passing of time.SoundDiegetic sound is where the sound is coming from inside the story world. Non-Diegetic sound is where the sound is not coming from story world. E.G back ground music.A sound bridge is where there is a transfer of sound from the non-diegetic to diegetic and vise-ver-sa.At 35:00 we have diegetic sound in from the narrative, also we have no diegetic sound in the back ground, then the sound changes twice in 36th minute as we find out that theres is a problem. Next it changes to a more energetic sound as Walter has a thought.  At 46:16 we have a sound bridge from the bar to walking out side side this is to represent that somethings is going to happen.
Meaning The locations of the film is partly set in Greenland, this is important as this is an has binary operation The costume of Walter Mitty starts of the film with suit trousers a blue shirt and tie with a white beige jacket, boring right? However we see that his costume changes and he becomes slitty hipster, which i suppose is better than being boring. this shows further. Also Walter goes out his birad this is represents wisdom this is clever as they it as he can looks like he is trying to get one over on his boss. At 01:38:00 we see Walter and his clog standing holding a box this represents that he has lost his job.  At  01:02:00 we see Walter on the long bond this is iconic as it shoes that his hands are free e.g being that he is free. Through out the film we see Walter holding on to his brief case this represents his work life and the ‘boring’ life he had where he never did anything. when Walter loses his brief case this means that he's moving on and trying to do something with his life. This has been shot in natural and low key lighting. This is because  this has been shot in day and night. However the film has mostly been shot in natural light.  Production processThe mise en scene of this film would of been planned out in pre-production, as the camera work would of. the budget of this film  is $90 million this would of been planned pre productions. As they were a lot of location these would of been planned pre and released to the press. As the cast would have. The filming is done in productions, the sound  and special effect has also been done in production. When this is finished productions is put in to post production. This will be where the editing of the film is implicated also the CGI will been added like the volcano scene. Then  they will do a premier an set a advert campaign.

L01 Task 1 Ownership of 20th Century Fox

A ME Productions

Hi Im Will and today i will be expelling owner ship using 20th century fox as an example.

20th Century Fox is a subsidiary [A Subsidiaries are smaller companies what are owned by a larger company.] of the cross media [ The company produce more than one media product by owing companies what produce different media.] Conglomerate [made up of smaller companies these are called subsidiaries] 21th Century Fox owned by Rupert Murdoch.  20th Century fox haven't currently worked with anyone.

As they are part of congealment they use Synergy [ Synergy when subsidies or congealment products are promoted by other parts of the group] to promote their films. For Example Avatar would have had frequent adverts on Fox Tv.

20th Century Fox produce Tv and Films. However this means that 20th Century Fox only specialise in Tv and Film Production. They have produced many successful products:
- The Simpsons ran December 17, 1989 – present and brought in a revenue of  2 Billion
- The Following ran January 21, 2013 – present.
- Brooklyn Nine-Nine ran September 17, 2013 – present.
-  Avatar ,December 18, 2009 it made 2,782,275,172
- Night At The Museum, December 22, 2006 it made $574,480,841.
- I, Robot, July 16, 2004 it made $347,234,916.
- Life of Pie, November 21, 2012 it made $609,016,565.
20th Century aim to cater for ever as they produce more than one type of genre to full on rom-coms to action packed actions.

We know that are successful because they have produced a number of box office hits and they have  also has become a house hold name. 20th century fox operate to the same and better efficiency as they big six media companies. They are very successful intentionally and nationally as they hit the top of the box office in lots of counties.

20th Century Fox main comports are Walt Disney Studios, Columbia Studios, Wanner Brothers and Metro-Gold Mayer. As they Produce they are in the Major Six for producing and distribution in the media industry. This means that the Major Six are in the same league as 20th Century Fox for revenue and productions. They stand out by the branding and there advertisement because of News Corporations is bigger then most other conglomerates.
