This is the final Vlog of this series!!!
The first thing we are going to talk about to day is active and passive thoughts in media.
Theodor Adorno, came up with a theory called Hypodermic Syringe, they said that media has a negative effect on the public, this is because Adorno said that mass audience said that believe anything they see or hear. This was thought up in the 1930’s however later on the active audience theories were all taken in to consideration.
Gauntlett, came up with another theory said that we are able to filter and adapt, to the content we are shown in the media. Basically this means we use media for your own purpose.
We could meet these two schools of thought in the middle and say that media could have a positive effect on people as it can teach us morals and other important life lessons.
McQuial talked about the Gratification Theory, this say that we all use media for our own purpose like in this film might be used for escapism. We also use it for entertainment and personal reality.
Stuart Hall in the ‘80s said that all representations media are specifically encoded by the producer to create a preferred meaning, in the Secret Life of Walter Mitty Walter (played by Ben Stiller) represents the average 40-year-old single man who is looking for a more with his life but is too busy with work.
Walter Is a stereotypical single 40 year old, he is on a match.com , got a good job and isn’t sopantaious but he wishes to have more exiting life. However he is also a counter-type as at the end of the film he is almost completely opposite.
In this film women are not objectified however they are seen as an equal. Walters boss a stereotypical pathological controlling man. Walter is weak to this however this changes though the film.
This film will not have any offensive material, as this is a PG, this rating was given to the film by the BBFC (British board of film classification). PG (or parental guidance) works can explore challenging issues such as bullying, bereavement or racism. The bullying part of the film comes at 10:15 and 24:50 at these times we see aggressive behaviour and making fun of the main character Walter. In a PG they will be mild bad language such as ‘shit’ or ‘son of a bitch’, however this is doesn’t apply to this film. Sexual reference are allowed in a PG if infrequent and undetailed , also if its a comedy it lessen the effect. They are sexual references in this film at 55 minutes in however as these are not detailed and in a comedic way. I would say that this film would not been censored as it’s only a PG.
This film sound track belongs universal records this means that thy will have paid for the use or given a % to the universal records on the profits of the film. This film could be illegally downloaded or stream though such web sites such as Bitsoup or Ice Films, this is worry for 20th Century Fox as they will loose money.
BBFC will moderate and chose what age certification the film get, the ASA look at what print advisement that the film have done and see if suitable for public consumption. For example this print on screen right now would have nothing that need to be regulated as it doesn’t break any of the regulating bodies. However like this print by Wonder Bra on screen now, was taken down as it was too sexual and was causing men to crash their cars.
