L01 Task 2 Script

A Media Education  Productions.

Hi i'm Will, today i'll be analysing "The secret life of Walter Mitty" (2013)

Purpose
This film produced to to entertain, however it also provokes a thought about that anything is possible and people can always chase there dreams as this is what the films about. "The Secret life of Walter Mitty" is a hybrid.

Genre
ahhhh....Not a Prius. It means mixture of genre combined to make a super genre. This film a mixture of Adventure, Drama and Comedy with a dash of romance. Like if you add Indian Jones, 12 years of slave, the hangover and titanic and mashed them up like potatoes.

Form
The form of this film is a feature as it is long. To be exacted it's  one hundred and fourteen minutes. This film is a remake of a 1950s, Its promoted in cinemas and distributed in wholesale and online.

Style
The style  of this film is adventure film. i know this from the classic conventions of travelling in to the unknown like going to greenland to find a thumb. This is a modern arty film, i mean this as the editing and camera work was adventure with matches the stye of being an adventure.

Narative
The narrative of this film follows Todorov’s 5 stages of narrative. The  first stage  is a state of equilibrium this means that, at the start of the film we learn about that Walter has a few problems, with women. However, this is normal in the story world. The 2nd stage is a disruption of the equilibrium. Walter goes to look for a photo slide for last ever cover of life magazine. However the the slide is missing. Next we have the recognition that it has been disrupted, when Walter goes to look for the slide this is where the recognition happens, as he finds out the its not there. The 4th stage is the attempt to fix this the dilemma. Walter goes on adventure skating downhill, running from volcanos escaping sharks and climbing mountains to love the problem. However he finds out that the slides in wallet at his mums house what has been thrown in the bin, he goes home and his mum took the wallet out of the bin. So finally Walter has solved the dilemma this creates a new state of equilibrium with is the 5th stage.

Camera Work
At 6.06 in the film .This is a aerial shot of people walking out of a underground passage, this is shot has been shot using diagonal lines, it also use the rule of third. It has the main character recognisable by his beige coat is positioned in the centre of the middle box. The colours in this have been balanced.

The editing technique of the plane flying across the water 37:30 is an a ellipse, as it shows the passing of time.

Sound

Diegetic sound is where the sound is coming from inside the story world.

Non-Diegetic sound is where the sound is not coming from story world. E.G back ground music.

A sound bridge is where there is a transfer of sound from the non-diegetic to diegetic and vise-ver-sa.

At 35:00 we have diegetic sound in from the narrative, also we have no diegetic sound in the back ground, then the sound changes twice in 36th minute as we find out that theres is a problem. Next it changes to a more energetic sound as Walter has a thought.

At 46:16 we have a sound bridge from the bar to walking out side side this is to represent that somethings is going to happen.

Meaning

The locations of the film is partly set in Greenland, this is important as this is an has binary operation

The costume of Walter Mitty starts of the film with suit trousers a blue shirt and tie with a white beige jacket, boring right? However we see that his costume changes and he becomes slitty hipster, which i suppose is better than being boring. this shows further. Also Walter goes out his birad this is represents wisdom this is clever as they it as he can looks like he is trying to get one over on his boss.

At 01:38:00 we see Walter and his clog standing holding a box this represents that he has lost his job.  At  01:02:00 we see Walter on the long bond this is iconic as it shoes that his hands are free e.g being that he is free. Through out the film we see Walter holding on to his brief case this represents his work life and the ‘boring’ life he had where he never did anything. when Walter loses his brief case this means that he's moving on and trying to do something with his life.

This has been shot in natural and low key lighting. This is because  this has been shot in day and night. However the film has mostly been shot in natural light.

Production process
The mise en scene of this film would of been planned out in pre-production, as the camera work would of. the budget of this film  is $90 million this would of been planned pre productions. As they were a lot of location these would of been planned pre and released to the press. As the cast would have.

The filming is done in productions, the sound  and special effect has also been done in production. When this is finished productions is put in to post production. This will be where the editing of the film is implicated also the CGI will been added like the volcano scene. Then  they will do a premier an set a advert campaign.
